Embarking on the journey of constructing a backyard sauna, I found myself contemplating the ideal attire for this new venture. As a lifelong enthusiast of clothing design, I couldn't help but envision a garment that seamlessly combined comfort and practicality. Inspired by the concept of "easy on/easy off," I decided to bring my vision to life.
Drawing on my passion for fashion, I reached out to a seasoned theater costume designer and skilled seamstress, Kathy Matalamäki, as well as a specialist in functional fabrics to ensure the garment's practicality, Gary Bieniek.
To my surprise, a serendipitous connection unfolded as Matalamäki and I discovered shared ancestry rooted in the same northern Minnesota town. This newfound bond fueled our enthusiasm, prompting us to join forces. We embarked on the exciting journey of bringing the "saunamekko" to life, weaving together elements of tradition, functionality, and a touch of our shared history.
